Another long period of silence on this blog, I'm sorry. Unfortunately our son became very unwell after his treatment for leukaemia and although he remained mostly positive and the leukaemia never returned, he was so damaged by the potent treatments that there was no way back. He left us in July of 2018. It was devastating.

We're rebuilding our lives without him and are determined to help other people who find themselves in the same situation. Last December we held an open day at our shop, (oh yes something else that has happened, we bought a shop in our village). It was a French themed day, we offered coffee and croissants, a prize draw and a selection of quirky things that we had bought in France and then restored. It was pleasingly busy, we raised over £200 for the marvellous local leukaemia charity LEAF who had supported us so well during the three years of illness.
So now we've made this a permanent part of our life. We have been so lucky to be able to earn a living doing what we enjoy - so it's pay back time. We'll be organising two or three events at the shop each year and also making a series of films about the trips we do to find the special bits and pieces for each event. I hope you'll enjoy them. The link above is just the intro for the films yet to be uploaded. The first two episodes show us travelling through four European countries in search of treasure. Our next open day is on 27th July this year, one year and one day since our son died, so a memorial to his life. Maybe we'll see you there?
There have been so many changes in both our business and private life that I don't quite know where to begin.

We have been overwhelmed with work for the last year or so, some very enjoyable and interesting projects like the design of a Danish cord seat for a very beautiful rocking chair hand made for the "Masterpiece" exhibition in Chelsea. It attracted a great deal of interest, so much that we have four more similar chairs awaiting seats in the next couple of months. We decided not to take part in any exhibitions for a year, hoping that we could keep ahead of the workload and maybe take some time off.

Some fame perhaps, but not a lot of fortune necessarily.....

After my last post in July of 2015 we were beginning to enjoy a few weekends away and visits to friends - the lovely bonus of not having to work every Bank Holiday at an exhibition. And then at the end of August a bombshell dropped. Our youngest son had just settled back into a new life here in Dorset after a period of working away. He started to feel unwell....... the diagnosis was acute leukaemia.

It has been a rollercoaster ride over the last eight months or so, chemotherapy and cancer treatment in general is very difficult. However, our son has been a superstar - totally positive in attitude. He had a brilliant Consultant and amazing care in hospital. I won't go into detail, but thanks to the progress medical science has made, our eldest son was found to be a perfect bone marrow stem cell donor, so in March of this year our youngest son had a transplant to "reboot" his faulty system. Thankfully he is now at home recuperating. Fingers well and truly crossed for a disease free future.

There's still a long journey to make back to "normal", (whatever that is) but there is a light burning bright at the end of that tunnel. How lucky we are to have two such incredible sons.

Sometimes life throws lemons, so we make lemonade - by the gallon.
I could blame the amount of work that's being going on... life's happenings in general.... visitors... housework....any number of things, but in truth it's probably because Facebook has become the place where I now keep a log of daily life. But, it's not the same is it? So here is the meat on the bones of activities here at FG Towers.

There has been a lot of work - in phases as always. A batch of rush chairs followed by a set of Wegner's Wishbones, then endless cane work, every conceivable thing from a day bed to a sunrise back. Next it will be four sets of Danish chairs, all different, plus eight various other chairs, that's August and September gone.

No chance of a holiday then!

We have also finally been able to rebuild the workshop, well sort of. There's a new felt roof complete with raised twinwall roof lights - not a moment too soon as the old corrugated plastic one was leaking and rattling on its fixings in a storm. There were a few occasions when I was convinced that the whole thing would rip off and disappear into the garden, but it didn't and I'm very happy about that. We also fitted a new double glazed door to the back wall which is great, no more freezing cold easterly wind whistling through the old wooden door and it gives a lovely glow of morning light for the "dirty working" end of the studio.

What else.....oh yes, more bespoke woven pieces for design houses. I really enjoy this aspect, I'm loving the creative, problem solving needed to imagine and then make something that doesn't already exist. Keeps the grey matter from fermenting, hopefully!

Most requests are for lampshades at the moment, but I have a lot more ideas in my head....just need the time to do it all now.Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-9373632764039473322015-01-14T12:25:00.000+00:002015-01-14T12:25:47.919+00:00Another yearI can't believe that it's been over a year since I last blogged, it's true what they say, time definitely speeds up as you get older!

It's been a busy year, Bernard our horsebox moved onto pastures new and will become a "glamper", (quite a fitting retirement really). We have hardly had time to leave the workshop and only did two exhibitions all year. I also damaged my back early in the year and it took almost two months before I could move without pain so we fell behind schedule which really put the pressure on.

We started work on the long overdue project to bring our home into the 21st century. Paint everywhere, walls taken down, ceilings replaced, new windows, curtains and carpets - basically chaos for months...and it's still not finished.

So what's in store for the New Year? First thing so far is a new look for the Seat Weaving Supplies website - that was a whole week gone! The dreaded price increases had to be made courtesy of the fluctuating world currencies, there's always some reason why prices have to go up, but strangely they never seem to go down.

I was also thrilled to see this in Vogue magazine, an article about the Chiltern Firehouse with two lovely pics of the lampshades I made for the bar. They were even mentioned in the editorial, but sadly no-one knows me, so it was the design house that were credited. Hey ho!

I would also need to provide pattern samples for their client and the finished items would need to be finished and available by November.

Hmmmmm I thought,.......have I got time to make moulds and have two matching bespoke pieces of weaving made in the timescale? And do I really want the hassle? Well I fancied the idea/challenge so said yes, I'd love to help. Samples were made and sent off for approval first to the commissioning designers, then the architects and finally the client, which is a bit unusual I thought. My curiosity was up, I had no idea who or what these shades were for and why the secrecy.....

Then a client asked us if we could supply some whole rattan and woven panelling for a bar front in a new London hotel project. Then someone else asked if we could make dozens of complex woven rush seats for a ceiling feature for, (you've guessed it) a London hotel project. Now I'm more than curious.....

Fortunately the completion deadline for the shades was moved to February which was good because the finalised design was large and complex to weave. Making the shades meet the exact size, shape and RAL colour specifications was indeed a challenge. Each one took virtually a week to make and at times it was hard to explain to the designers why certain things had to be done in a certain way - a moderate compromise would be needed - they knew exactly what they wanted to achieve in terms of looks, but as none weavers the concepts of borders and working with finite lengths of material is a bit tricky to incorporate into a design. For example, when number one shade was finished I asked if they would like the second one to be woven in the same direction or would they like it to be woven opposite so that they would be a "handed" pair and sort of face toward or away from each other. After explanation the decision was to make them "handed".

Well the deed was done and the shades were dispatched to the designers for final approval. I was told that the hotel would be opening sometime in February.

Meanwhile we supplied a quantity of special herringbone woven panelling to a client and passed the contact details of some French weaving friends on to the people that wanted dozens of rush woven seat pads for a ceiling.

I asked the designers if I could possibly have a photo of the lampshades in place and they kindly sent me this:
Which is great because although I would love to view them "in the flesh" in situ, this is probably the last I will see of them as they now hang in the much lauded and applauded venue for the famous - The Chiltern Firehouse Hotel in Marylebone. A lot of hard work but worth it. I'm proud to be a small part of such a creative and ambitious project. From my Dorset workshop to the London land of chic, seems like a long way away to me....... Have a look at what The Times had to say here http://howtospendit.ft.com/destinations/54823-the-chiltern-firehouse-rebornKimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-12587434769963391722014-02-09T18:15:00.000+00:002014-02-09T18:15:36.233+00:00A Whirlwind of Weaving and Weather.Well the weather has been pretty awful here since before Christmas. Constant rain and incredibly strong winds have bought some areas of Dorset to a standstill. Even here where we live in East Dorset, the fire brigade and police had to rescue a number of residents from their mobile homes....in a boat! The homes were only a few hundred yards from a main dual carriageway which also became flooded and impassable when the fire brigade pumped the water onto the road to move it away from the mobile home park. Amazing and unprecedented flooding is everywhere, trees have been brought down blocking roads or damaging property, driving has been hazardous as the weather has swung from hail and rain to bright sun that at this time is so low in the sky that it causes dazzling reflections on the road surface.

There are definitely some benefits to working from home!!

So a quick round up of activity. We've had quite a few "bucket" seats to reweave. These are very beautiful, but they take an age to restore. This first one has "blind" caning, a type of weave where the canework is woven strand by strand into the perimeter holes and then plugged in place. The holes are only drilled half way into the chair frame so that the weaving doesn't show on the back of the chair. Time consuming doesn't begin to describe it!

Then there is this one. Not "blind canework, but still very awkward to weave.

The last "Captains" chair has a standard cane seat - no problems there, but sadly it also needed to be paint stripped, re-glued, bleached and refinished before weaving could even start. I don't know where all the time went!

The main problem with this obsession is that chairs are a bit big to collect, so I've compromised....I only collect child sized chairs now!

So for Christmas this year here are a few of my favourite old kiddies chairs that I've dressed up to celebrate the joys of the holiday season. The soft toys are all much loved family favourites, some are over 60 years old. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

The first day of Christmas. This is a mid Victorian rush seated chair adorned by Big Ted and Kylie.

This is one of the main reasons why the blog has been a little bit quiet for the last few months, I've been doing a lot of general sorting out here at FG headquarters and one of the projects I've been itching to do was a makeover of the DIY booklet that we include in all of our Hand Cane Seat Kits. Well here it is - finished!

It had to be done, all of the paperwork and images that have accumulated over the past 20 years were starting to get overwhelming, it's still going to take me a long time to sort them out properly, but at least I've made a start. This is the first DIY instruction booklet makeover, more are in the pipeline already. If you're interested have a look at our Facebook page for more updates.Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-46489314500326401242013-10-16T12:57:00.000+01:002013-10-16T12:57:26.904+01:00Bernard's Swan SongIt's been eight years and a lot of very beautiful and some not quite so beautiful times since we first bought Bernard. It doesn't seem that long....but there you are! Everyone thought we were mad, why on earth would we want to buy a ropey old horse truck and then even worse, spend loads of money and several weeks of spare time we didn't have converting it into an exhibition wagon? Well I can't really answer that, it was just something that we wanted to do.... a bit like ice skating in Central Park, or snorkeling off the Barrier Reef.

I remember the excitement when we first saw him in the stable yard, oooh so tatty but full of hidden promise, it seemed like an age before he finally pulled up in our front drive on the 9th April 2005 and we could start work on the grand project.
800 hours labour and three months later we had this.

We recycled all sorts of bits and pieces to build the interior living area.

Most of our friends started to understand what we were doing, but it wasn't until recently when "glamping" entered the English language that we started to feel....well, quite normal really! At the shows people would come specially to see the truck, they loved him, still do, but it's time for him to have a new adventure with someone else now.

It has taken us the best part of two years to make the final decision - 800 miles a year isn't enough for this old boy, he needs to do more. So now we're looking for a new home for him next month.

So it was ironic that our final show with Bernard would be at Breamore House, one of our favourite places in the world and also where we started out on the show circuit proper back in the early 90's. Bernard's swan song was magnificent!

So it's the end of an era for us and hopefully a bright future for Bernard and his new owners. Who knows where he'll end up, but wherever it is, I won't be able to stop myself from watching!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-34310471367157062242013-06-30T13:37:00.000+01:002013-06-30T13:37:34.669+01:00Rattan poles.....thousands of' 'em!It's been a funny few weeks, by that I mean funny in an odd way, not funny haha sadly!

We knew there were two important tasks we had been putting off that could wait not longer. First was restoring the woodwork and cab on Bernard our trusty old Bedford horsebox and the second was to sort, cut and bundle a mountain of raw rattan poles into more sensible and manageable sizes.

As luck would have it the weather has been okay for the past few weekends, so in between the odd shower we donned masks, ladders and sanders then threw ourselves at the mammoth task of horsebox restoration. Bernard is 10'6" tall and 19' long, so to say it's a big job washing and sanding that lot is a severe understatement. Meanwhile we had phoned the mechanic to ask him if he could check Bernard over for his annual "plating" test, thinking that we had plenty of time as we don't need to use him until the end of August. So imagine our shock when the mechanic told us that we'd better get him down to his yard asap as the testing station was already fully booked until, (you've guessed it) the end of August!

So panic ensued, pressure applied. We worked away madly for three solid weekends and then took the truck to the mechanics yard. We're all keeping our fingers crossed now that we can get a cancellation at the local testing station, otherwise it will be a 40 mile plus trip each way to the next nearest one!

So this is what he looked like when he went to the mechanic. Woodwork almost finished and the cab only partly started. Ooooh I hope we can get him tested and back home soon, still lots to do.

So once the truck panic was over, we girded our loins for sorting out the rattan pole problem. Last Wednesday, the two of us plus two friends (probably now ex-friends) set about the task. I hate to admit it, but the old adage "out of sight is out of mind" is so true. We had genuinely forgotten just how much rattan we have. At first we were optimistic that we could achieve loads in one day, but by the end of a VERY long shift, it was obvious that the job was going to take at least another week of concerted effort. This was the mountain we were looking at sorting and is only about a third of the total.

And here we are trying to decide where to start.

So we were a bit worse for wear after that lot and decided to have a gentler time this weekend. We've pottered about gardening and doing nice, quiet things like............

......rescuing lost frogs from the middle of the kitchen floor. Don't ask.....I have no idea how he came to be there suspiciously covered in fluff from the tumble drier!

I wonder what next week will bring?
From Georgian to 60's...and back again!I was recently made painfully aware that next year will be the 20th anniversary of the "birth" of my trading name - Former Glory. Where did all that time go? Thinking about the range of furniture in the workshop these days and looking back, it's amazing how fashion has changed peoples preferences over so few years in relative terms.

In the beginning it was mainly Victorian and Georgian furniture that came in for restoration. Spoonback chairs and heavily carved walnut, little barley twisted tables and anything made from rosewood with ornate inlay and mirrors. Pretty, practical, occasionally OTT and to be honest sometimes huge, heavy things that were difficult to move and consequently gave me problems with my sacroiliac joint that I still suffer from today.

After about ten years it became more about Arts and Crafts. William Morris, Godwin, Macintosh etc. The prices of anything from this design period went through the roof and people realised that it made good economic sense to keep their Art furniture in good order. We saw plenty from this period, probably because lots of it had hand woven seating and labour intensive oil and wax finishes that need attention periodically.

Nobody wanted "modern" back then. I remember distinctly being lambasted for having a soft spot for this practical simplicity of Danish mid 20th century design and worse still being raucously laughed at for lusting after the slightly imperfect hand made beauty of rush seated country chairs.

But then more recently the world changed again. Modernist designs were "in". The Bauhaus, Danish and progressive designs, all previously largely unloved and out of favour, were finding their way to our workshop. I've lost count of how many "Cesca" chair seats we've replaced, (named 'Cesca after Francesca, daughter of the designer) and if I had £1 for every Danish chair we've seen........well!

Finally a proper comfort zone has arrived for me.

So.....where next? Shall we go around in a big circle and find a renewed interest in the classic lines of the Regency period, or will it be a yearning for the decorative - a return to Victoriana?

Well that's anybody's guess, but my money is on anything original, comfortable to use, beautifully made, practical and SMALL. All power to the independent makers of this World, your time has come!
We've been very quiet on the blogging front for a long time, mainly because so much has been going on that finding time to sit and write has been difficult. So today a chance to do a quick catch up!

Our Goddaughter came to stay with us for a few days last month and we had a lovely time. She is French and determined to speak English as well as her Mum, (who speaks English fluently). So while she was staying with us we arranged for her to spend time at the local infants school as a volunteer helper. I think the time was enjoyed by all, she played football and helped the children with their crafts to the point where she rubbed a blister on her hand from using the little scissors so often. The teachers told me that she was also very helpful indeed in the French lessons! Such fun.

Meanwhile we have been wading our way through a mountain of work, everything from an experimental woven piece using carbon fibre to reviving a marquetry table top, no opportunities for boredom here.

It is good to be able to work outside again, one of the great joys of being self employed is the freedom to change workplace whenever it suits. It also means that I can watch the local wildlife. We are so lucky, these little creatures breed every year in the bank of the yew hedge. Such a privilege to watch them emerge and then quite frightening when they start to fly!!

But very sneakily, they have also changed the parcel sizing structure and standard compensation levels. This means that unless a package is very small indeed, we will not be able to afford to use their services as some prices have doubled in real terms.

So to save costs whilst trying to maintain a reliable service, we are using a plethora of couriers including a two to four working day service. Regular customers may notice that their orders take a couple of days longer to arrive than normal, but please bear with us, we are trying our best to keep delivery prices the same as before. The next day England/Wales service and costs have remained the same.

The rattan embargo is still in place so the material supply for our craft is still strangled. How much longer this will continue we don't know, but we are trying to keep as much stock on hand as we possibly can so that we can all continue to work.

On a brighter note, it's not long until the Summer!! Next big job for us is to bring Bernard out of his Winter livery.

Stripping the wallpaper off in one room revealed a need to re-plaster the walls, so this dirty job added to the already burgeoning list of other things "to do" has left us with the feeling that maybe we'll never get to the end of the work! It'll be a while before this room is back in commission.

However, work doesn't do itself, (as much as sometimes I wish it would) so soldier on we must! The third and penultimate African chair is finished and I'm mustering up the courage and concentration to start the last one soon.

It is lovely to see the finished article, but such a lot of weaving, effort and time goes into it. In between times for a bit of light relief, we're catching up with all of the drop-in rush seats and cane chairs that need repair. Trouble is as soon as we think we're getting ahead of the workload, more arrives, don't get me wrong.....I'm not moaning!

Another beautiful thing has happened, here's our new friend, his name is Digby and he's 14 weeks old.

Sadly he's not ours he belongs to our friend, but I have a feeling we may get to see him often. What more could we ask for!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-79873349548106007502013-02-14T11:03:00.000+00:002013-02-14T11:03:42.665+00:00Snow, Decorating and Chairs Galore.Well it's been a long time since I last wrote a blog post - sorry! Perhaps it's something to do with the Winter season, it's harder to be enthusiastic when it's dark and cold outside don't you think?

We've had more than our usual share of snow and ice here in Dorset this year, I admit it's very pretty, but I guess because we never expect to see so much bad weather here in the south, it always causes chaos. Trees down, roads closed, burst pipes....it's all happened locally. And then when the snow melted to be replaced with icy winds, there were three bad car accidents in one week in our little village thanks mostly to the ice. Each time the road was closed and in one incident the fire brigade were called to cut the roof off one of the cars. Like I said earlier, snow LOOKS pretty!

Today is dry and sunny, it's even feeling a bit warmer, so I'm hoping that enthusiasm returns with the good weather!

The New Year's workload arrived promptly, which is great news, as long as you have lots of spare space to store stuff until you get around to it. Unfortunately space is something that we've never got enough of at the best of times. However, this year in our infinite wisdom, we made the problem even worse by deciding that the time had definitely come when the house decorating had to be done. Picture the scene, all of the room space normally inhabited by waiting work is non existent, instead it's occupied by random bits of decorating equipment - step ladders, paint pots and piles of stripped
wallpaper. It is an obstacle course, I keep telling myself never mind, it can only get better! ("sighs")

There is a lot of interesting and challenging work in hand, so that helps. The last two African chieftain chairs are here and started already.

There's quite a bit of cabinet work to do on a few other chairs like this one that needs an arm transplant.

And to fill up my last few working hours, I revamped our webpages! Have a look and please let me know what you think. http://www.formerglory.co.uk/

So all in all a busy time. I'll try to post blogs more regularly, but in the meantime if you're interested we'll be posting "workaday" news on our facebook page here - https://www.facebook.com/FormerGlorySeatWeaving

The Indonesian rattan embargo is still in place.....at the moment, but fingers crossed that the situation will change this year. I think we could all do with some truly GOOD news. We are back to work now with a vengeance, first seat of the year was on this lovey old traditional spindle back dining chair.

Today it's something a bit different, a green paper fibre rush back on this Shaker style rocking chair.

The lady who had his chair made for her daughter over 30 years ago said that she never liked the webbing panels, I'm inclined to agree with her. I hope she likes the new weaving we've done when it's finished!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-26587365820549479982012-11-21T17:18:00.000+00:002012-11-21T17:18:45.783+00:00The run up to ChristmasAlways a busy time of the year one way or another! For us it's the deadline to finish customers furniture in time for a perfect Christmas holiday and the time when our regular customers for materials need to stock up to meet their own deadlines. So all in all we are very much kept on our toes.

The last few Mondays in particular have been very busy on the phone, so much so that sometimes as soon as you put the receiver down, it rings immediately. Doesn't leave a lot of time to weave, but we are getting ahead now.

Our first order of cane materials has arrived and a second is due here in the next week or so. Hopefully we will have enough to keep everyone going for quite a few months yet. No sign so far of the Indonesian rattan embargo being lifted, but keep your fingers crossed!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-83949516413642205712012-11-04T14:37:00.002+00:002012-11-04T14:39:34.662+00:00Rush and cane weaving, perfect for cold, dark winter days! It's cold!! The leaves on the oak tree have turned a gentle shade of gold, toadstools grow in clusters like freckles on the lawn and the days are shortening.
We haven't had much luck with our efforts to grow vegetables this year, normally we have so many courgettes that we sicken of them, but not this year. This tomato sums it up I think, one of the very few that grew to a decent size and it somehow managed to get caught between the wire shelf!
I enjoy cane and rush weaving more in the wintertime, they are both nice clean occupations that can be done in a small well heated space. We've got plenty to be getting on with and a lot of variety just now. Old and new rush seats,
Time to look at old photos then.Strange times. This week the weather has swung from mosquito ridden damp warmth, to very heavy rain, then sunshine followed by chilly, cloud free nights. I'm obviously not the only one who's confused by this weird weather. These are emerging daffodils in our garden today.

And this is a beautiful flower that has decided that October is the month to shine.

All so very topsy turvy. The rhododendron hedge was in flower at the end of last month for the second time this year and oddest of all, a white rhododendron flowered white in the Spring and then purple in the Autumn. Peculiar.

However, the unpredictable weather is a perfect excuse for getting all of the admin and other boring "housekeeping" duties in order. It was while I was in the process of filing old photos that I came upon these very old images of work I'd completely forgotten about. Work that was done at a time when I did more of the heavier restoration....and had more space! Here's a "before" photo of a well worn piece.

We still have this old shopfitting cabinet, it's perfect for holding all of the bits and pieces you need to use every day. Each drawer is familiar to me, I know exactly what is in each one without even looking. It still looks moreorless the same, even though I've used it everyday for about 10 years, but here was the photo I took immediately after it was finished.

I don't care where I end up, or what I end up doing in the future, this cabinet goes with me!
Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-1156377704717644282012-09-28T11:43:00.000+01:002012-09-28T12:06:35.274+01:00The end of the Summer SeasonWhere did the Summer go? We seem to have had wet, wild weather for months now and it's been punctuated by far too few days of sunshine and warmth. What's the betting we'll have beautiful bright clear skies right through the Winter when it's too cold to go outside and enjoy it.

The bad weather has made a lot of jobs more difficult. We've been trying to "get our house in order" for months, (if not years) now. Clearing out the detritus that seems to accumulate and multiply over time. We are getting there, spaces are beginning to appear and rooms are beginning to look tidier, but oooh it's hard work and the bad weather isn't helping!

There's always another weaving or restoration job in the workshop waiting to be done, which is wonderful, but also means that we are usually under pressure and get very little time off. We keep our diary of work over on Facebook these days, https://www.facebook.com/FormerGlorySeatWeaving mainly because it is quicker and easier to update. We will still be blogging regularly, but I'll try and choose the subjects or jobs that deserve to be described in more depth than can be done on Facebook.

So....the last few weeks - what's been happening? Well we've had loads of Bauhaus Cesca chair panels to replace, (the 60's are definitely back in vogue). The second of four very large African chieftains chairs needed a new seagrass seat, a couple of sets of Moller Danish chairs needed re-cording and a surprising amount of pots arrrived for cane wrapping of the handles. We also did our last show of the year at Frome. For once, it was a gloriously sunny day! I'll leave you with some pics.....

Quite busy too.

Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-92149354451963323612012-09-09T15:36:00.000+01:002012-09-09T15:36:45.674+01:00An update on the embargoI'm sorry, I didn't realise how long it had been since we last blogged. We have been busy on a lot of fronts.

In the last month, we have done our last two weaving demonstrations of the year. It was a strange feeling, demonstrating the craft that we have practised for so long, meeting new people wanting to have a go, their fresh faced enthusiasm, whilst at the same time knowing that the rattan embargo problem hangs over all of us involved in this specialist trade. Should we really be encouraging new blood into the craft when there is the possibility that the necessary materials may become totally unavailable? A difficult dichotomy.

We decided that we couldn't just sit by, watch and wait. So I e-mailed and tweeted a few people with a link to our blog post about the embargo. It took a while, but thankfully people are rallying. Robin Wood of the Heritage Crafts Association has told me that he is "on the case" bringing the Basketmakers Association and other individuals together to see what can be done. One of our customers, a full time professional weaver is so concerned that he has bravely set up an e-petition, thank you. Here is the link:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/rattan-export-ban/

As I write, almost a hundred people have already signed and commented in the first two days. Now other organisations and individuals are adding their weight to the cause by blogging, tweeting or commenting on Facebook. Thank you all, please spread the word!

Whether all of this wonderful support will have any effect goodness knows - but doing nothing isn't an option, hope you agree.

On a purely selish level I want to be able to continue to restore things, bring stuff back from the brink. It hit me hard when I realised that without rattan peel, splint and reed, this crib would be have been landfill. Is it wrong to feel that way?

They have been asking us about the future of rattan supplies as they are hearing rumours.....
At the beginning of this year the Indonesian Government implemented an embargo on the export of rattan. Last year the Jakarta Post wrote:

"Early this December, the Trade Ministry of Indonesia, totally banned
exports of raw and semi-processed Rattan starting from January 1st
2012 as part of efforts to revive the ailing local rattan industry and
to give higher value to the commodity at home. Along with this move by
the Trade Ministry, the Industry Ministry and Forestry Ministry show
their support for this policy. MS Hidayat, Industry Minister, has also
created a road map as guidance for developing the domestic furniture
industry and boosting the competitiveness of locally made furniture
during the next five years."

So yes, I'm afraid there is a problem for those of us in the restoration industry that use rattan products. Even though we pose no threat to the Indonesian home market, we are caught up in this event. At the moment, many of the processing factories outside of Indonesia have retained back up supplies of the raw materials, but these are dwindling fast and they cannot be replaced. Raw material prices have increased massively, we have had reports of rises up to 200% during this year alone. The factories that produce hand weaving cane and woven panelling are selling their stocks at hugely inflated prices and then closing. Their staff are finding new careers in other industries as even they see no future in rattan. We have been told by a friend of ours in the industry that up to two thirds of the factories have already closed.

Where does this leave us? For now supplies are available, but the prices are going to be much higher than we have ever experienced before. Some of the products that we are familiar with will no longer be available as the skilled workers who make them leave the industry. Indonesia isn't the only area of the world producing rattan, but is generally acknowledged that they are responsible for about 80% of the production and needless to say there will be stiff competition for the other 20%. Will the ban remain in place for long? We don't know, but it's effects will no doubt resonate for a long time to come.

So where's the good news? Synthetic rattan has already made itself a firm favourite and almost replaced rattan as the material of choice for conservatory and patio furniture in most areas of the world. Take a trip to your local garden centre and see how many suites you see in synthetic versus natural material. Maybe over time the dwindling demand for natural rattan furniture will encourage the Indonesian governors to view the export ban differently and see that there are other important markets for their semi-processed premium materials....that is all assuming that we as premium consumers can survive in business for long enough!

Meanwhile all is not lost. We have some ideas that we are already formulating to ensure that we can continue on helping our customers to stay in the restoration business, so don't worry. There is always an alternative.......we just need to find it first, but be assured, we are doing all we can.Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-63221521548364032512012-08-04T11:12:00.000+01:002012-08-04T11:12:54.838+01:00Preparing for Stock Gaylard Oak FairThere's still quite a bit of client work to do, but we are getting ahead as most of the jobs in the workshop now are scheduled for September delivery. Sooooo.....we can begin preparations for our final demonstration of the year at the Oak Fair. The "to do" list is endless, the horsebox needs work, we have very few pieces for exhibition, must make some footstool frames...etc....etc!

The vintage crib frame that we bought a few weeks ago is getting restored. It's time consuming, but I'm pleased so far.
Going to have to get my old sewing machine out and my thinking cap on - next task is to line the inside with something beautiful! Any suggestions? At least it will be something different to put on our display, with or without a lining!

Here's one of the most recent client jobs we've finished, this chair had a full restoration and is due to go home soon. A lovely old armchair that would originally have been on rockers.
We're also enjoying the Olympics, it's one of the great things about being your own boss, you can watch, (or at least listen to) the telly while you work. Thank goodness the weather improved over the last week, otherwise it would have been a complete washout.

Hey ho, onward and upward....lots to do.Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726170033009701810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645979427668175837.post-42298248034875237272012-07-23T11:07:00.000+01:002012-07-23T11:07:53.845+01:00Summer sunshineIt's amazing what a difference a bit of sunshine can make isn't it? The world seems like a different place. We love it when it's dry and warm, work dries more quickly and joy of joys, we can work outside. Case in point, on Saturday we sealed the seats on the last chairs for the National Trust outside in the sunshine, they were dry within the hour....
Ready to go back to Cornwall!

The garden has suddenly burst into life, plants that I thought had died in the torrential downpours had survived after all, triumphantly raising their heads to the bright warmth of a somewhat belated summer.
